Area rugs

Area rugs can seem so daunting. If anyone has ever went shopping for rugs, you know what I mean.
The price of a good wool area rug is obscene - I'm talking thousands.
Yet many would argue that it is worth it since one of those rugs would last a lifetime... but here's the problem...

Colours, patterns, and styles in general change so often that buying one rug and living with it just isn't possible anymore.

I love Home Sense for rugs. They are all so gorgeous... but there are a lot of people who just want a plain colour, and then there's people who want a really thick rug but don't want to pay thousands. Here's your solution;
Carpet stores will order you carpet and then have the sides bound for usually 2 or 3 bucks a linear foot.
This means you can get a custom size without paying a custom price!

The only issue with this is that you need to understand that carpet comes a minimum of 12 feet wide. So if you want a 7'x9' area rug, you will have waste (or make a matching hall runner!). There are only a few carpets that come 15 feet wide, but you can ask about which are available in 15 when you go to the store. 15' makes the perfect size for two area rugs, so this is pretty popular (keep in mind, though, that there aren't a tonne of choices in 15 feet... so don't be picky!).
There is always the option of having the carpet seamed (two smaller pieces with a seam down the middle), but this will be an extra charge, and in the end you aren't really saving anything.

What are the main benefits of this route?
1. You will generally pay less
2. You can get a custom size
3. Carpet stores also have wool available if you want a long-life carpet
4. Sometimes you can find a remnant carpet or stock which makes it even cheaper
5. All wall to wall carpets have some kind of stain resistance built in
6. You can match carpet in a room (ie. carpet runner matches bedroom carpet)

Are there any drawbacks? - Of course there are
1. You can end up with carpet waste, and nothing to do with it
2. The backing on carpet is harsh and can eat away at the finish in hardwood (purchase an area pad)
3. These are not readily available for you to take home right away
4. They generally will not cut out a circle or an oval for you

Things to keep in mind;
- Shaw and Tuftex have a soft back carpet which means you won't ruin your hardwood, although it will slide
- Tuftex will make you an area rug out of their carpets, and they do circles! (no ovals, though)
- If you have hardwood, you should take up your rug for half the year, or else the sun will lighten/darken the wood around the area rug - not good for re-sale

Let's all have the ease of a hard surface and the comfort of carpet in our homes - go area rug crazy!
